Video cards for the short of cash
I presently have a GeForce 2 GTS in my computer (which I originally discussed here). Those who've been following my current video saga know of the current situation, namely that Jumpgate is the only game I have that won't work.
Now, I'm aware that, as RazorsKiss noted in the rig upgrade thread, that there won't be much use out of upgrading video without getting everything else. But, given my generally slow upgrade path (c'mon, I'm still using a motherboard and processor that was "old hat" like 2 years ago ), the possibility that a vidcard will go underutilized isn't a huge concern to me, as the rest of the system will catch up when finances allow, and until that point I'll still have a functional system that handles my current needs. However, finances aren't that great, for me, so getting the "latest and greatest" vidcard isn't really an option for me. What are decent options for a card a step or two down from "hot [excrement]", but not so far down the power curve that changing would be a "sidegrade", not an upgrade? As I said in the other thread, I have a preference for nvidia, but considering that my nvidia card is the issue, ATI isn't completely eliminated as an option worth at least considering. |

Figures I'd forget a detail in a 4am posting...
As best as I can run the numbers, taking into account that some of my bills aren't always of a fixed amount, I have up to $150 or so free without endangering covering bills (which are generally more important than Jumpgate, as paying them enables me to keep playing Jumpgate... or would if I could get the thing to work ). |

As much [excrement] as I'm expecting to catch for this, I've decided to just go with a cheapy GF4 MX from the local BestBuy for ~$40, and save money for whipping together a whole new system, instead of piecemeal upgrades.
I know the GF4 MX doesn't even compare that well to my current GF2 GTS, but given that Jumpgate is probably the most demanding game I have, and am likely to have for a long while, speed isn't that big a deal. In short, I'm taking "right now" over "right the first time". ![]() |
