Any XP 64-bit suggestions?
So, after owning a 64-bit processor, but using 32-bit windows XP on it for over 18 months, I finally 'upgrade' to XP 64-bit.
I can't yet see a wow factor, ho hum. My old firewall solution - Kerio PFW 4.6 - 'doesn't work' DivX player - 'doesn't work' I'm sure this list will increase as I check more stuff. I need either a work-around for Kerio, or a suggestion for a new firewall, please. Any other suggestions? |

Re: Any XP 64-bit suggestions?
after running XP64 bit edition for about a year my suggestion, switch back to 32 bit. You will eventually pull your hair out every time you get that error "Im sorry but it seems your windows is not designed to run this program". No amount of compatibility wizard will fix it either. And some older programs don't like the (x32) in your 32 bit program files folder so you will never be able to install them. Bottom line is, its more trouble than its currently worth at the moment. I don't recommend it, and recently removed it myself.
But, since you asked... If your looking for 64 bit antivirus, I suggest AVG. Well actually, I recommend AVG for antivirus no matter what the hell kind of OS you run. Never had a problem with Divx, are you sure you got the right install? |

That's just not true. Especially now.
There are only two things I have not been able to get to work in Vista 64 bit.

Re: Any XP 64-bit suggestions?
really jump? I learning to loath vista, it's tons slower than xp at just about everything and Installations are painfully slow on vista, 3dmax9 (important to me)runs like crap on vista. I have xp64 and vista64 in a dual boot and I only use vista to play the few games that use DX10.
I hope the SP fixes some of the speed problems because a fancy GUI at the expense of speed certainly makes me feel like I wasted a ton of cash and time on a slower OS. Witch can't remember my folder settings BTW. Jonboy unless your running photoshop CS3 or some other program that needs more than 2 gigs of ram to run well or having an unusual amount of programs running at the same time there is no reason to go 64 bit.....at all . |

Jump, how big of a preformance difference did you get between 32bit and 64bit Vista? Just recently got a new computer, came with 64 bit processors... and 32 bit Vista. Bastards.
I use another computer for anything needing XP, so am in no hurry to swap that one back as well. |

Re: Any XP 64-bit suggestions?
Well, my kid couldn't play Railroads because it pushes 2 GB. But with Vista 64 I use all my 4 GB's and it works fine. Seemed a lot faster and the issues I had in 32 went away for the most part. After a few Windows Updates and Nvidia updates it has bee pretty darn good. Except for the bad stick of RAM I had recently.
I know it didn't have any of the "won't install" issues that XP has always had. The only issue with 64 is it wants to install with 2GB and then after you can add your extra RAM in. |
