There are two ways to look at it. It can't play older games. Well, how many of those are ones I can't play now because my system won't handle those "newer" games. And will it eventually play games better. I went through that with win2k. And I'm still using win2k today.

This seems to be the toughest decision to make on this. I don't want to wast $150.

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Jumpgate is the only game i've come across that i can't play [in vista]. Starcraft, Baulders Gate (I and II), Dungeon keeper, all work fine.

Just jumpgate. Which wouldn't be so painful, except the dev's appear to like it that way. Ouch.

And technically, i suppose i am reccomending Vista home premium, but only because when i looked at the big picture that's where i went. If i had money to burn (which it doesn't sound like you have any more than i do in that area) i'd certainly buy xp and wait on vista for a half year or so. But since i don't have money to burn, and I want to be current in 9 months, i went with vista.

Course, again, you'll have to wait until they get around to making Jumpgate work for you. And they don't appear to be too worried about that. so... i'm going to go play some random flash game for a while.

I am only worried about Jumpgate Evolution working in it. And if not, I can always get the cheap version of XP and dual boot.

Well, Paypal is empty, wallets empty, everything is empty.

But I got everything ordered except the video card.

I guess I need to get off my lazy butt and go do some web development work to earn some quick cash.

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Damn, I'm too late then...

You should have read this link on Tomshardware for the Hard Drive. I just bought the Samsung SpinPoint for 110 from NewEgg and it's 500 GB. The Samsung OEM's are covered by the manufacturer's warranty for three years too.

Tomshardware.com Spring Hard Drive Guide

Oh, and I'm waiting until Jumpgate Evolution and StarCraft II get closer before investing in a new PC since those are the games I *need* to play while my current system just barely gets by. This gets me the benefit of lower prices on future parts... which is great... kinda.

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Keep in mind that I am on a 20 GB drive now. I look at that 320 GB and think. What the heck am I going to do with all that. I still need to get the GPU or I will be in trouble when I find things don't work and it's passed certain return dates.

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Yeah, that's true. But for the same price, or cheaper, you get more space, good performance, and most importantly, longevity.

If you don't use the space though, you probably won't need it. Personally, I download alot of videos and movies (less than 25% porn) and I'm always running out of space, having to backup data (on my current 80gig). Sadly, now I must backup all my drivers so I can install the new drive and that is going to have to wait until next week when finals are over.

*cries because he just got his new 500 Gig HD today and his current HD has not been found 9 times upon start up so far...

All my new toys are coming tomorrow.

All I need now is the GPU.

@Aphelion

Well ATI just released their new midstream DX10 cards... and they are crap. :P

Ya might need a bios update to see a larger hard drive if your system is older.... Or use some software from the hard drive maker to let your system see it.

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Sweet everything is coming today! I can't wait for the parts to get here so I can go back on the net and find all the prices were lowered today.

At least I can get everything assembled today and all I need to do is snap in the GPU and start setting up. *is giddy*

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Everything came today and I got it all assembled. Now I just need a Vid card and a DVD burner. The tech sure has changed since my last system build. I still managed to get it all in the case and hooked up. Man that is the biggest honkin CPU HS/Fan I have ever seen. lol

Re: Closing in on my final descision for my new rig.

Graphics card is on it's way. Though with the weekend and holiday it most likely won't be here till next Thursday or so. Either way, it's done. It's taken me several years of saying I need to do it, to finally get it done. The good thing about all that is that if I had done it three years ago when I needed to then I would still probably need to now again.

I just hope I don't go through RMA hell. Been there and done that, as I am sure every gamer has.

Dang that Graphics card is huge.
