Looking forward in 2009, we have EVE, STO and Jumpgate Evolution are due out.

Most are figuring STO cant hold air, cept the Trekkies.

So I think we will see the EVE population go down, and we get to

wait and see which one of these comes out on top.

STO will be riding the coattails of the movie, it gonna be interesting times

First off:

Ad's don't make a game, in fact, they won't even bring in enough money to keep the servers up. That's why there will always be a monthly subscription fee, and yes I'm well aware some free-to-play MMOs are out there that have Ads in game, but you know what? Not only were those games designed like that (with sub-par graphics) but they were also designed by mostly indie companies.

I dont have a problem with in game ads as long as we can blow them up! I mean common, thats one of the goals of the gams is to blow stuff up? What use would in game ads server if we couldnt blow em up!

Well no one is going to pay $30 for a video game sub especially now and the customer as well as the entertainment provider gets a benefit for the customer watching ads. We watch tv ads and get entertainment for free so 15/0 15/10 15/5 or what ever just as long as the customer get a benefit after all without the customer there is no revenue for ads. $15 a sub is plenty of money to run the game and make a good profit and hopefully the box sales will cover the development costs.

BTW for a guy who is heavily into RP how exactly is a Pepsi add gonna add to immersion in futuristic space game?

Ummmm... no. For starters, thirty a month is WAY to expensive! You're talking $360 a year, granted that might not be a lot for some people but not all MMO'rs are made out of money ya know..

Lots of people spend $30/week on cigarettes. $30 at the pub is probably not a big deal on many Friday nights . . . . It's not so much the amount -- it's how it compares to similar offers.

A) NO.
B) I wasn't suggesting Jumpgate Evolution would be $30. It will probably be $15 - $20. I was basically suggesting that in-game advertising may not make a game free, but could lower the cost (or allow for more costly content at no increase in price).

Because advertising is part of "normal life" for us so I can see a well-done COKE or McDonald's ad (actually, it would be a better buy for Red Bull, Saitek or LG methinks) being part of a far-future "normal life." When I envision this, I think Blade Runner.
