Its funny, the biggest thing that kept me in windows was the multichannel sound, as it didnt work on this machine (which used to be my primary mediaPC).

I had promised myself that once multichannel audio worked... I would take the plunge.. and so it did.. and I did. Weird if you take into account that by today standards this can't be the HTPC (and it isnt) but decided that it was worth it to do it anyways.

A client decided to throw away a Dell Precision 370, P4 2.8ghz with small 40gig sata drive and 512mb ram (which is a lot better compared to my old Sempron 2400+ from where Im typing this message). The Precision also had an old 64MB Nvidia Quadro card, which is noticeable better to the one I was using (Geforce FX5200) or so I feel.

Anyways, I upgraded the new HTPC to 2GB memory, threw in the SB Audigy value, which should work well for 5.1 content and the last piece of the puzzle... CoreAVC, a highly efficient video codec that allows my system now to play 720p MKV H.264 content, whereas before, without it, it wouldnt while using 90-95% of the CPU now does it flawlessly with 55-65% of CPU. Still can't do 1080 stuff but at least I was able to watch the Beijing Opening and Closing at 720p and 120" :)

Of course, not everything will look as nice all the time, but I love it.

When I get the camera working again (or if I get somebody to take new pics) I'll put some pics up.

Finally a place to find good Sci-Fi 24 hours a day. But then they started failing to strike deals such as the B5 fiasco. Canceling popular shows in the first season. Then came the wrestling and now silly game shows. It's only a matter of time before the all night infomercials show up. With Stargate Atlantis going off the air what is there left that makes them a Sci-Fi experience besides Sanctuary? I won't even get started on the corny movies they make.

Anyone else feel the same?
