Jumpgate and Vista

Got a new computer that comes with Vista installed? If so, your Jumpgate days may be over. According to Istvan over on the JOSSH forums:

Microsoft has claimed that DX10 is supporting backwards compatibility. Jumpgate has been developed under DX8.1 and is presently known to run appropriately under DX9.0c.

That said, please note our system requirements state that we support Jumpgate on Win 95/98/2K/XP. NetDevil for the time being makes no claims about, and presently will not support problems with, Jumpgate running under either MS Vista, or any 64-bit versions of Windows.
If anyone manages to get Jumpgate working under Vista, we've had some people having problems doing so, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Supposebly, MS did make DX 9L to make older games compatible with Vista.

There are problems because vista can only emulate DX9 and lower.

Jumpgate re-write is comming anyway then. heh.

If ND doesn't, most people will not play cuz Vista will not allow.

If they do, what about people that have older machines? Joy.

Or they could rewrite it with OpenGL so I could play it in OS X and/or Linux. That would also prevent the dependency on the latest OS with those horribly high system requirements.

Well, the guinea pig has been able to log into Jumpgate and chat, but every time he launches into real space/shared sim, he locks up.

Yeah, they're already so great with supporting and quickly updating for just one OS...

That's easy. Release a binary kernel with the networking and other important code locked to prevent exploits, and open source the remaining sound/rendering/interface code as modules that the community can keep updated for their respective platforms.

"Easy" being a relative term, of course.

Open Source is not the answer to everything. That, however, is another thread, and one that would be little more than virtual masturbation in this particular case, given that ND has shown absolutely zero sign of or inclination towards letting loose any of the Jumpgate code to the public in any form other than the compiled program.

(Not that they're wrong for doing so. They did the work, they get the say-so.)

ok still no luck for me, i tried to install windows xp but when i do it tells me my setup is not compatible.i have been doin some searchin and basically what it says is my system came with dx9 and dx10 on it, i was also told that the developer of "games" will be the ones who have to fix "issues" with these type of problems by writing some kind of code :/ so i guess i bought a f'n $800 dollar paper weight

I finally got time to install vista on another partition on my gaming machine. Im happy to report that Jumpgate works just fine on my machine with Vista!

I had no major issues at all getting it to work. I had the typical are your sure questions of vista (made famous with the mac ad) and my updater crashed 3 times trying to update. However once i got updated i joined just fine. So far all that is installed is jumpgate, updated nvidia drivers and soon my saitek drivers once they are downloaded.

Edit: DAMN IT! Now i can't launch... so am wondering if i was on crack the first time or if i wasn't actually logged in when flying... updates soon...
