The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
Well it happened, we turned the sucker on and we were greeted by the red ring of death. We tried all the listed things (no, not the towel trick). And then called MS.
The procedure was very quick and easy. I was surprised as It was nothing like the ordeal when our xbox was eating CD's back in the day. They are sending an empty box with a UPS Authorized Return label so there is really nothing to do on our part other than to tape the repair number to the box and the unit. We only have to send in the unit. So all our saved games will still be on the Hard Drive for us to re-attach when the new unit arrives. And we get 30 free days of XBOX Live. I hear that if you have XBOX Live you get a free game. We had absolutely no problems for the first nine months. Then bam, there it was. Oh well, we still have the XBOX to tide us over. At least they admit it this time and are taking care of business. Which of course is much better than dealing with Class action suites and customer loss. We'll see how it goes. ![]() |

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
Yeah, the customer support branch at Microsoft has undergone a big transformation since the 360 was released. With console reliability becoming more of an issue as the systems are pushed closer and closer to the cutting edge, they really didn't have a choice. I don't know a 360 owner that hasn't had some sort of problem or issue with their system at some point.

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
I think they are making these consoles too small to deal with the heat issues. And then giving the option to stand it straight up was just asking for trouble. Though, I am wondering if some poorly coded games are causing a lot of the issues especially with heat. I know they do on a PC but we can control the heat there.

Heh, my youngest son has a fridge in his room for beers etc (birthday pressie from his brother - not sure what the etc is!
). Think I'll suggest he sticks his 360 in there before playing... when it comes back from the repair shop. |

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
As much as I hate to say it, my friend and his uncle both own 360's with aftermarket fans on them and they haven't had problems with them since launch yet (gen 1 360's too). My other friend has had his newer 360 (gen2) for awhile now, but he always keeps it on it's side.

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
Update: The box came the other day. Inside was a UPS 3day select return label, foam inserts, and anti-static wrap for the unit. They even put in a long piece of packing tape that I just had to peel the back off. I packed it up and dropped it off at the UPS store around the corner. It got there today so I await further notification from them at this point.

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
Update: I forgot to mention that we got it back last week. Of course it was not our unit which kind of pisses me off. You work hard to take care of things and then you end up with something once owned by a CD tray forcing moron.
It works good now. I did notice much more fan noise now at startup so maybe they have finally figured out that heat is your enemy especially at boot up. And of course, it has kids glued to it playing Halo 3. But not till homework is done. ![]() |

Re: The Dreaded XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death.
I too had my 360 go down to the RROD after 3 weeks I got mine back only to have the power supply die 1 week after. MS want's me to ship it to them at my expence before they repair it. Thats not going to happen. (BTW the new one sounds like a hoover its rediculusy loud)
Microsoft realy ought to stick with software cause they totaly suck at hardware. I stoped buying there optical mice as well because they break after 2 months. There is no excuse for a 33% faliure rate in this day and age, so now I sit with a broken 360 with a 1 k investment in the console, games, Hd player and a pile of movies. So now the moral question, do I suck it up and just buy a new power supply because I so heavaly invested or just throw it in the trash and go with the PS3? |
