Re: Alternate Characters
yeah dunno if i like the idea of multiple alts on a single account. i mean, if they publish all accounts and account owners, how am i gonna hide behind 2nd accounts so i can go on civripping sprees??? so a big NO to alts. make em pay to be douchebags, like in Jumpgate Classic.

Re: Alternate Characters
It really could go either way, it would be nice to allow alts for ship specializations and quick changes, etc. But doing that also allows for one alt to 'pay' for civripping while your other goes on its merry way. But again, an alt isnt a clone, its meant to be a different char...and diff people are diff...so...now I feel like a pretzel.

Re: Alternate Characters
I would doubt ND will allow unconsentual PvP in regulated space in a game they are trying to attract and retain several 1000 players. The games that feature unregulated PvP only have a few 100 players after the 1st 3 months. This is hystorical fact. Even WOW PvP servers only have a few hundred players on them. MMO players are generaly carebear players.
It sounds like most of the posters here have never played any other MMO. Alternate characters is totaly a non issue. Sense of community is a non issue. Make friends join a guild, group with guild members and friends. Me, I prefer the group of the moment thing. |

Re: Alternate Characters
Sure they will allow it. Just because your in "regulated" space doesn't mean you are entirely safe. Sure it should be a lot less likely, but if someone wants to shoot you down, there shouldn't be something in the game that stops them. Maybe makes it harder, or causes them consequences, but having some sort of safety switch is just not part of the Jumpgate DNA.

Re: Alternate Characters
Sure we have. I'm guessing you never played the original jumpgate. It was/is something special. Most of the posters here just have the hopes that they won't sacrifice what made Jumpgate special in order to be more like 'WoW' in the hopes of attracting more players.

Re: Alternate Characters
Unfortunately, many of us have seen alt accounts abused, so making them more readily available could lead to broader abuse. It's a shame because I believe most people would use them to do alternate playstyles and RP-type accounts . . . fight in your Oct account; mine in you Quant account.

PvP servers in WoW work because the noob areas you cannot be attacked in. An example of this working in Jumpgate would be if say the Factional station sectors and all linking sectors create some sort of immunity to civilians of those factions. I don't like this idea and I think this is where NPC's can really come in handy. I don't want to see NPC's all over space but when I get to my Core station I want to see so many military NPC's flying around that it would take a decent size invasion force to gank noobs as they launch. I'd take this over immunity which is what most/all other MMO's offer the noob areas. Anyway, back on topic. Other MMO's have multiple characters on one account for the main reason that the more you have to play... the more you play... and the more you pay (by playing longer). The main reason you cannot have characters of opposing factions on the same server on the same account isn't to prevent spying... it's to make you buy a second account if you want to be on the other faction too. Don't forget when comparing Jumpgate Evolution to other MMO's (especially WoW), you gotta realize that many decisions the top MMO's make are based on profit and not game mechanics per se. I want to see multiple characters on the same account personally. I want to log in and be a hauler then re-log in as my PvPer. Mainly because of the way PR works. Just my opinion. Anvil |

Re: Alternate Characters
Anybody who ever had any real impact in Jumpgate had multiple accounts. Anybody who played jumpgate for more than a year had multiple accounts. Anybody who was deep into PvP had multiple accounts, or benefited heavily from somebody else who had multiple accounts.
The only difference is that now those people will spend less to play the game. The other difference is that Jumpgate II becomes a little more like the other online FPS's, so more of the market will be attracted to the game. Is this really such a panty-wadding issue? |

Re: Alternate Characters
Well, I think of myself and my SR squad that we had impacted the game's economy somehow... and nope, we were all (at first at least) owners of just one account.
And then... well, i've played straight since beta5 and never got a 2nd account. IMO if I have to share the time between accounts, my pilots wont see much of me online. Squads dont grow if leader isnt on, so... only one account for me (also, budget dont allow for more). ELP |
