I don't think comparing "online shooters" with a "persistent universe" is an accurate analogy.

I hear what you are saying.. but it's two different issues. On the one hand, you have a continuity of events. i log off, other people keep playing and changing the environment, as opposed to a diablo-type game where I log off, and next time everything looks just the same as today. On the other hand, you have point-and-shoot mechanics, as opposed to click-and-hope, diablo style. (I use diablo because it defined a genre.. lots of folks can relate to it, i bet.)
So, one could have a persistent point and shoot, a non-persistent point and shoot, a persistent click-and-hope, and a non-persistent click-and-hope. Jumpgate is a persistent FPS. Jumpgate also has the whole mining and hauling thing, so it's an FPS with a bonus. But when you are talking Jumpgate combat, you are talking FPS. |

Oh yeah, do you find ammo and guns lying around after a battle? Is there a beginning, path, and end to an objective?
FPS are a whole different genre IMO. I have never had to develop a character or role play in a shooter. I just had to shoot well. And the next time I played, the last time had no effect. |

But there are crosshairs, bad guys, areas to explore, guns that you shoot, and money that you get for killing them. There are even different types of armored suits (only we call them ships) that you can wear. Oh, and you can even group up and blow bad guys up faster. Just like an FPS. |

FPS (First person shooter), RPG (Roll Play Game) RTS(Real Time stratigy) are styles of game play.
Refered by themselves they are single player games. MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) is what needs to preceed the above play styles to make the distinction between single player and persistant universe. There is also MP (Multi Player) Not perstant universe but supports a number of people playing an instance of the game. Jumpgate = MMO FPS World Of warcraft = MMO RPG Diablo = MP RPG Warcraft and starcraft = MP RTS Doom = FPS can also be MP FPS |

No, sorry, I am not buying it. Jumpgate eludes definition which is why it has been so appealing to so many of us. It's many types of games all rolled into one. And in Jumpgate Evolution there will also be 3rd person so it's expanding it's genre even more.
I see bit's of all of the above in Jumpgate. |
