I hear what you are saying.. but it's two different issues. On the one hand, you have a continuity of events. i log off, other people keep playing and changing the environment, as opposed to a diablo-type game where I log off, and next time everything looks just the same as today. On the other hand, you have point-and-shoot mechanics, as opposed to click-and-hope, diablo style. (I use diablo because it defined a genre.. lots of folks can relate to it, i bet.)

So, one could have a persistent point and shoot, a non-persistent point and shoot, a persistent click-and-hope, and a non-persistent click-and-hope.

Jumpgate is a persistent FPS. Jumpgate also has the whole mining and hauling thing, so it's an FPS with a bonus. But when you are talking Jumpgate combat, you are talking FPS.

Oh yeah, do you find ammo and guns lying around after a battle? Is there a beginning, path, and end to an objective?

FPS are a whole different genre IMO. I have never had to develop a character or role play in a shooter. I just had to shoot well. And the next time I played, the last time had no effect.

Right, but you said other online FPS allow multiple characters. I don't know of any online FPS that are subscription based MMOs, with the exception of Planetside, which I've never played. The MMOs that do allow multiple characters have lots of content only available to different classes and whatnot. Fighters can use certain gear, defenders can have only certain powerset, etc. In Jumpgate there was no real need for another character unless you wanted to cross factional boundaries, which you can't do in other some of the other MMOs with pvp (WoW for instance).

So, unless they change the availability of ships, so that a solrain pilot for some not reason cannot eventually have access to all solrain ships, there really is no need for multiple characters on a single account, save letting your children play when you're at work.

You certainly have me at a loss when you decide to factor in the subscription based requirement. I'm no gamer.. not by a long stretch, so my experience is very limited. Jumpgate is the only game i've ever paid a subscription for, so I can't speak to any other subscription based games. There are a good deal of non-subscription based FPS games, however, but we've apparently decided to ignore those (?).

I don't understand why playing different factions isn't a good reason to offer multiple accounts. It fits your example perfectly.. "Fighters [Octs] can use certain gear [Oct Ships], defenders [quants] can have only certain powerset [quant ships], etc.

it also works for RP folks, by substituting in [Pirate] and [Pirate tools], respectively.

Well, I do find pieces of equipment floating out in space, so that's the Jumpgate version of loot...

As to "And the next time I played, the last time had no effect." I absolutely agree. And that's the part about persistent vs non-persistent.

I'll grant that jumpgate doesn't look like an FPS. But there are crosshairs, bad guys, areas to explore, guns that you shoot, and money that you get for killing them. There are even different types of armored suits (only we call them ships) that you can wear. Oh, and you can even group up and blow bad guys up faster.

Just like an FPS.

FPS (First person shooter), RPG (Roll Play Game) RTS(Real Time stratigy) are styles of game play.

Refered by themselves they are single player games. MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) is what needs to preceed the above play styles to make the distinction between single player and persistant universe. There is also MP (Multi Player) Not perstant universe but supports a number of people playing an instance of the game.

Jumpgate = MMO FPS
World Of warcraft = MMO RPG
Diablo = MP RPG
Warcraft and starcraft = MP RTS
Doom = FPS can also be MP FPS

To me Jupgate has and allways will be an MMO SFS JR (Space Flight Sim) (Joystick required). Just to separate it from all those other fake space RPG games.

Jumpgate isn't loved by you because it eludes definition, Jumpgate eludes definition because you love it. People are funny that way.
