Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
I assume everyone remembers that one weapon in the FPS genre that continuously charges up the longer you hold down the left mouse button? I'd like to see something along those lines in Jumpgate Evolution (possibly a good implimentation for the sniper rifle concept some of you guys have been asking for). It'd make a great replacement for the Thief, a weapon that we all thought looked good on paper, and discovered was complete crap when we tried it out. It would also serve as an incentive for ships to carry bigger, heavier capacitors.

Re: Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
What does that thief do, anyway? 5 years of flying, never did get around to figuring it out.
I kind of like the idea of a weapon where you could strategicly choose between a short rapid fire and big, slow fire.. all depending on when I depress and eventually release the trigger. Probably wouldn't be popular in PvP, unless it was made powerful enough to beat up the other guns, at which point it would probably be a balance thing. But for a ship that doesn't fire often, like a miner, it might be perfect. ... watch the flux come in from 20K out, building a massive charge the whole time.. aim carefully, and .. boom.. heh |

Re: Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
hah yeah, as I was reading this thread I thought of the fusion cannon in Descent also. =)
I vote yes... it'd give another weapon for us to utilize. The weapon would have to have slightly more damage per second potentially when fully charged then a Injustice, since it'd take more skill to operate. Assuming it's size 2. |

Re: Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
Meh, size 2, size 3. It would make sense to pair them up, after all. And just to clarify, the charge wouldn't build up by some exponential rate, it would simply drain the capacitor dry of energy when fully charged, and the drain would be a constant factor (meaning draining an alembic would take significantly longer than, say, a spore). The advantage of carrying a heavier, more powerful capacitor would be simply more energy to put into a single shot.

Re: Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
The Thief was essentially just a beefed up mining laser. It had 1k range and (according to the TRI infobase) was capable of something like 10k dps. The reality of it was that because the range was so short, no one could keep them on target long enough to cause any damage. Partly because of how ships moved in the game (imagine keeping a ffing, circle fighting nix or phoon dead center in your HUD for 3 seconds), and partly because of the deflection angle of the guns on most ships.

Re: Charged Weapons a.k.a Replace the Thief
Isn't the Thief what Gobbles used in the Wyvern? I know I took horrible damage in my HM when he got in close to me.
As to the other weapon idea, I like it. Then again, I like most weapons. |
