Descent style missions/gameplay

Before I played Jumpgate, I played a lot of Elite, Star Wars (the wireframe arcade version), and Descent. In Elite and in the TIE fighter battles in Star Wars the fighting style was similar to Jumpgate, fly around and shoot stuff - but try not to bump into the occasional hazard. Descent was different. Similar to the trench fights in Star Wars. The atmosphere is tighter and the style fighting is more like an FPS, in that you have to come around corners into an unknown adversary, or snipe things using the walls for cover.

I'd like to see that in Jumpgate.

Imagine if the stations have ventilation passages that you can fly thru. Not big enough for a full fighter, but big enough for a gust or premia. You could have two types of mission with these... 1) The Trouble with Tribbles. Wipe out an infestation of monsters in the passages. 2) Destroy that battle station. Like Lando Calrissian in Return of the Jedi, fly into the station and take out the power core. Pew Pew! Boom!

naaah, lets keep the traditional flight thing in Jumpgate.

because i seen games with ships or vehicles that have fps style combat controls, and Jumpgate does not need to be another fps set in the third dimenton.

which reminds me also, of that other space mmo, vendetta online that we beta tested 3 years ago which also had just that.

Well, if u remember, EP2 was supposed to bring huge roids with passageways inside. You were supposed to use a new item, the headlight, and travel thru those roids looking for fights and all.

Descent is a game I'll never forget. Not sure if u guys remember, but one of the stuff the box said was about the 'feel' of it. You were 'floating' and I couldnt help but feel vertigo in some sections. It was that kind of game that if u had a VR head tracking unit.... you would need to 'disconnect' from them every 30 mins or so. Music was exhilarantly too, best techno of the day (in games at least) and do u remember the runs after setting off the destruction timer?

It would be awesome if there could be some fights like that.

Question from a marginally interested by-stander:

Isn't Jumpgate a FPS? You fly your ship in the first person. You shoot things. You interact with your environment in the first person.

There will be third person perspective as well in Jumpgate Evolution WileE.

Hmm. You don't say.

Question from a slightly more interested by-stander:

How the hell do you fight in a spaceship in third person?

My quotee referred to Jumpgate and it not becoming a first person shooter. I was merely offering that, at least in my opinion, Jumpgate Classic is very much an FPS in it's gameplay and interaction.

I'm unemployed, so I have time to troll more.

LOL, you do it like Earth and Beyond. You watch your ship like an out of body experience. Thankfully it will be a choice. Did I get that right, "third person", bleh, I am too tired to figure it all out.

I would leave the controls for the ships pretty much how they are now. They're already adding lateral and vertical thrusters.

I agree that we shouldn't dilute the main game. I'd just use a skilled level designer (which they probably have at ND) to advise them, and beta test it, to make sure it's doable with the current ships. I'd definately leave it as a sub game. An alternative means of having fun.

Re: Descent style missions/gameplay

Current ships? I thought all the ships were being replaced with new ones. I kind of wandered why I didt see a lot of grumping about people going to lose their favoriye Ranger or something. I thought maybe we'd all have to start as noobs again, no problem with me, but I'm sure that would hurt some feelings too. So you see, with the info we've got so far I wasnt really sure about the tiny details, lol.

Re: Descent style missions/gameplay

By current ships I mean, whatever they are using to test Jumpgate Evolution, not the current ships in Jumpgate Classic. I don't think they should design ships to create this sub-game, but use ships that are in Jumpgate Evolution, unchanged. And make sure the tunnels are useable with the physics model and ship control method they using everywhere else. Make the tunnels and passages fit in with the rest of the game-universe, by design.

I don't care if the current Jumpgate Classic ships make it into Jumpgate Evolution at all. I'll choose an RP and fly the ship that fits it (and my fighting style) most closely.

Re: Descent style missions/gameplay

I think having a few tunnel-type flight scenarios would be fun, but they shouldn't be required. More as just a thing to do to say that you'd done it, or to get at some fun easter eggs?
