I didn't get too much into that genre, though this is absolutely my favorite game intro - Mechwarrior 2 Intro

The recoil when the rookie gets pwnd and the casual disregard as the enemy nails the veteran gave me painful goosebumps.

That was a pretty cool intro Ike

To address Wild_Bill's concerns: There would definately be times where the masses rush to whatever new "best" config comes up. This is would generally be due to pilots like Tesrend wtfpwnbbq'ing opponents with a certain setup. But gradually players would find out that they can customize the ships suited to their tastes. Sort of like Purge in his Ammo Dragon, and Sent in his laser Nix.

Additionally: I imagine there would be ships set up for more "solo" type work or small wing combat, and ships that are geared towards lasting in a huge firefight with 30 pilots on each side. Ships would be setup with a particular mission in mind...and if they get caught outside of that mission they might be in real trouble, even against 'inferior' ships.

Perhaps if we are to have specialized ships they should come with built in bonuses? Mining ships with built in deep radar, cameras, rotacols and possibly CM? Haulers with built in CM or SBs? Fighters with built in duelists and BCU's? Ranger/Scouts with built in cameras, radar boosters and BCU's? What about arty hunting ships with built in Rotacols, cameras and SBs? What about ECM's built in for non-combat ships? Make them harder for bad guys to find.

Or simply have packages of modexs for these "professions" that would be available at higher levels for purchase? Instead of 3 sz 1 modexs, you would have a single sz 3 or sz 4 modex (so it would be easier to keep them from being abused on combat ships?).

Sure, built in bonuses are a good way to move the masses towards those types of hulls....but it can also be rewarding to fit that "miner" full of guns and fast engines and wait for some un-suspecting pirate in an ambush
