Re: Ejecting and Scooping Cargo
In "Elite" it was a great idea. In Jumpgate Evolution I'm worried it would encourage evil-doers to destroy their victims to scoop up the cargo. Lag issues worry me too. Look at the battle last night. Everyone in sector was complaining about the lag and that was just pilots and missiles without any cargo or wreckage to complicate things.

True, but you still have to remember that the netcode was written a long time ago, the servers aren't that numerous, and the net has changed a tad since then. Albeit, the game really isn't that different, it's just time to *up the ante, so to speak. EVE NPCs drop wrecks 99.9% of the time. There is a timer on how long they exist in space, which usually runs around 2 hours. I really don't expect Jumpgate Evolution to be that elaborate, or extensive when it comes to dropped cargo (if it's in there), but hardware and code can all be updated and tweaked to handle it. Also, the map can be used to identify sectors where *someone is dropping your faction cargo ships at alarming rates. Security can be beefed up, missions can be setup by computers are stations. Like, say, the pilot who is responsible. There is your bounty. Mission: Kill or drive out of faction space. Or something like that. Viper2c Lampshade Tazor and sometimes Korr |

Re: Ejecting and Scooping Cargo
Yes. While I felt that my time at ISU was inherently evil, it was still goddamn fun. (I still have brusies on my then-young ego from Ambro/Brotherhood's posts, ha, to be 19 again) I'm pretty sure that Jumpgate Evolution will be a factional game, and with a factional game as "open-ended" as Jumpgate is, you should be allowed to break away from that faction.
I always thought it was weird to have evil-rogues in the "good" Alliance in WoW, and nature-balanced shamans healing undead on the Horde. It was equally odd to see members of all three factions fighting against... well, all three factions. Pirate tags made it a little more clear... but. Oh ha, I just remembered the first time I played EVE and I heard someone on Teamspeak saying they were being attacked by pirates. I came rushing to see the battle in my little n00b ship only to find out "pirates" meant NPC mobs. People need a clear-cut option to be a pirate, need to know the costs and benefits, and need to know how to stop being a pirate. Maybe pirating should be "endgame" content that only Opti's are allowed to do, eg I spent my time learning about society, now I choose to not be constrained by it any more. I dunno... I'm too sleepy right now. But yes, pirates = good. Even if your ships just drop "random equipment XXX" from a container when you die, or you probe the wreckage, there should be an in game benefit to having pirates around besides pseudo-griefing. |
