Well Information Warfare would find a good home I think in Jumpgate PVP. The ability to confuse the enemy would add another dimension to the game, and give players the ability to think more tactically instead of "Everyone Shoot XXX...RAWR!!!!"

@AlGore

You know in AH2 where you have this situation you dont have that problem at all. Heck since its WW2 you dont even have a radar. Its all visual targeting of Spit16, Spit16, Spit8 and Spit8.

Though what makes this possible is that you see icons under the planes with either names or with plane types.

If Jumpgate should implement hidden names it also has to implement pilot/shiptype tag display on the hud. You shouldnt have to ID with targeting because then it becomes to confusing.

As long as you can quickly see where your wing man is when he says "get the tens of my arse" or "Im attacking the nix" then you really dont have a problem with seeing which target he means. It becomes a problem when you dont know where he is and you have to find him and then his target by cycling through targets.

It also vastly improves your situational awareness in AH2.

We keep bringing that game up, but for PVP its the model as far as my idea goes. Now again, I am not considering all the "MMO" opinions about having your name hidden in flight...still thinking on that.

This is a space sim, not WWII

I know by looking at a ship what it is, as should any pvp'er worth their salt. There already is an icon on the HUD.

If only it were that easy.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

I like a cross between wwiiol and the current system.
  • Targets way off in the distance do not have any icons, but you can make them out if you look hard enough.
  • As a target gets closer, a grey circle is placed around the target.
  • Still closer and the grey circle will turn either green (friendly), red (hostile) or gold (squadmate).
  • Still closer and the the ship type is displayed in the same color as the circle.
  • Get within firing distance and pilots name/shield/armor and duelist information become visible.
That would be pretty swank.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

That could work with some tinkering I guess.
Not sure I'd like too many "circles" though, space would be too cluttered. Maybe just "dots".
As things stand now an ECM'ed ship is not seen at all until a particular distance, dependant on ECM type.
I don't like the idea of only seeing a name once in range though. But I guess you all noticed that already.

Al

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

A squad leader with the ability to number the different enemy ships in sector would be nice for furballs.

pyldrvr: pilot x and y attack target 1.

But I still think taking names out of the game would remove a lot of the community feeling among the PvP folks.
Maybe not everyone liked that aspect as much as I did.

But when we ran into a pack of Octs and I scrolled through names like Russian, Xerout, Wilson, Zaltys, Liet, RazorX, etc. it was really fun.
You felt like "The gang's all here, lets party." (pun intended )

And I saw plenty of the veteran pilots turn the enemies tendency to attempt a "gank" against them. Evasive manuevering by Rockdoctor led to many a Quant kill on folks too interested in podding him.
And I still remember a 3v2 that ended very badly for the home team because everyone focused on Tesrend, who never fired a shot, while his team-mate (I think it was SingleShot) leisurely picked each of us off.

I played WWIIOL and you never got that same sense of community.
There was some sense. But not like Jumpgate.

I will stop rambling.
I just really dislike the idea of not seeing everyone's name.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

Yea I really dont know how to answer that concern, but I do understand it. If ND kept the military tag system it could be implimented with that only...that way squads that wished to stay military tagged would obviously use it. But in retro, that wouldnt address your concern, so not sure how to approach that.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

Assuming that Jumpgate Evolution will have much more people, hiding names is redundant because community will not be as tight-knit as it is now.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

The fame or infamy of pilots in Jumpgate is part of its charm IMO. I prefer MORE personalization (name/shipname/squad . . . even semi-customizable personal decals or squad decals on a ship).

With 400+ online the better leaders knew, or came to know very quickly, who the main threats were. As such I disagree with your comment.
Of course, there will always be an element of surprise, which makes you think twice next time. Take away the name, remove an aspect of the game.
Think about all the mouthy little mofo's you have ever met that gave you some cheek, not knowing who you were, then got sent home in their pod. They knew your name the next time they saw you, they knew better. Either that, or their 10 buddies knew your name

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

Well, I think squadnames should show, but individual pilot names shouldn't. However, like in that wwII game, when you get ripped it still says:
Pilot Algore killed by Reece.

You still get your notoriety. I think it should be factional, and that multifactional squads can privateer for their government (or rebellion) of choice. I think you'd have to assign a ship a name when it launched, and maybe reassign it when it explodes. For example:
I see Algore and Magnus as [3]Octavian/OV/Vulture and [2]Octavian/OV/Kubrik. When I rip the ship called Vulture and get the message 'Pilot Algore killed by Reece' I know that Magnus is flying Kubrik, and if he doesn't actively change ships or get blown up before I fight him again, I'll know that he's the same guy I fought earlier, I'll know it's him in Kubrik (because of the message I got when he ripped me).

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

You suggest a situation that could be replicated now by simply switching accounts with squadm8's?
