the only way i could see hiding the names is if each pilot's ship had a unique transponder code that included a Shipname. And no two ships could be named the same. I think i prefer the status quo regarding pilot names in any case, though i guess i'd be willing to try it out if they wanted to examine this idea in beta.

Re: Hide Player's Names in Sectors

Bad idea I thought the idea was to promote the sense of community not kill stone dead.

Name less ships going by in space = DULL as dirty dish water, now you jump into a sector you see a blue /red/green dot you target it and its your old mate Billy the kid who you haven’t seen since last Monday week, and you just missed him logging in as you were off getting more beer, thus a conversation takes place you have a laugh you team up and go off to have some fun with Billy’s squad mates who are coming in from the other direction about to make the jump into flux space on a hive busting operation.

You jump into sector see blue/red/green dot you target the ship with no name and then sail on by none the wiser you don’t say hi as you have no idea if you know or even want to know the other pilot , you then log off as its about as much fun playing a MMO not knowing who the hell you are playing it with. well its just not a good idea.

You'd still see names if I had a say in it, but only of your own faction. (though you could join rebel or tri faction to make that your faction instead of your factional faction). It would build a sense of community within a faction, and a sense of tension between factions. Both good for a Jumpgate with more than 1000 active players.

The main problem with hidden names as i see it is that then you need some sort of IFF thing for the HUD, then a way to quickly designate Friend and Foe in a meaningful fashion. if you dont have that friendly fire and innocent bystanders become serious problems real fast

I'd just like to point out that in Jumpgate Classic, all three factions are supposed to be working together and as such, there is no reason to hide the name of a pilot from a different faction.
