If I were designing the Jumpgate Evolution universe...
I would have each faction have many many sectors and stations that are culturally and logistically isolated from the other factions. After all, these factions evolved in their own isolation for years before discovering each other. And they still fluctuate between an uneasy peace and war.
So for instance. I would have the far reaches of each faction, meaning the territory they gathered in isolation, be faction only. So each would have say 10 - 15 stations and 20 - 30 sectors that are to remain isolated from the other factions. Maybe have gates that only let that faction through. Then in the frontier as they approach the central common ground where they discover each other, we can have some frontier stations that can be accessed by all. This would be the space where we met each other as well as the Conflux. I would not just have unreg be the center, but also the areas between each faction and beyond each faction. I think this would give many players a regulated civilized society to operate without conflict to learn the game or avoid it if they wish. And it would give the adventuresome the ability to move on to more dangerous territory. Of course, each faction would be lacking in some specific resource to encourage inter factional trade or risky mining. Anyway, without going into a lot of detail, that's how I would set up the framework of the universe. |

And perhaps, especially in the 'core' area of each faction, the space between gates should be quite short. Call it a result of early less-than-standard travel speeds, or just a results of gravitational effects on forming systems or whatever. I'm just thinking that you might see some increased econ travel with reduced gate distances, as well as have more pilot interactions when things are a little more compact.
Of course, with individual sectors being so large, one could still get lost. And, for those long gate-to-gate jaunts, there is always the big sectors in the middle, as it were. |

While "big space" is the direction Eve took, and succeeded with, you don't have to fly your ship. You map a route and click "go" (yes, I know you can manually go gate-to-gate, but why would you?
If Jumpgate expanded space to that degree, some sort of autopilot (and perhaps hyperdrive) would have to be part of the deal . . . which have large impact in lots of areas of gameplay. I do agree with more unreg. Though I would also like to see territorial war worked-in to the equation. I like more sector and longer sectors. I think you are missing the point of my idea. I'm not asking for bigger sectors, just a more sensible order to the universe. To resemble more of how three real space faring civilizations would expand and come into contact with each other. With the added bonus that players could stay out of the way and still play if they so chose. Or take risks and interact with other factions if they so choose.

I think I understood that . . . bigger sectors was my "add-on". But I believe lots more sectors would be implicit in yours to make it work correctly . . . no?

Keep in mind my idea adds many more stations to each factions "core" civilization.
The question has always cropped up over the years on the "if and how" to deal with separate game play styles. I think they can both be accommodated without the need for separate games or servers. Just have core civilizations that factions keep protected and have frontier faction sections and then the unknown and uncontrolled. I think such a setup could accommodate everyone and make for some interesting gaming. |

I wouldnt mind seeing a couple of sectors classified as "Safe Zones" Say for Example, Sol Core Station is considered a safe zone. If any pilot from another faction with a bounty flies into sector, the stations automated defense systems come on line and give you a pod ride home...
I wouldnt want to see large numbers of sectors designated as safe zones though... Just maybe 1 or 2 per faction... just my 2 cents... |

Again, my idea doesn't offer a safe zone. Just because only your faction can gate there doesn't mean there are not other ways to get there. It also doesn't mean you won't piss off someone in your own faction.

I have played a lot of games with safe zones. And it basically sux to know that you cant kill your enemy cause he is hiding in his safe zone.
How is that going to encourage territorial warfare when your enemy cant lose territory. Other point is. These safe zones always separate player interaction. "Carebears"(no offense, just dont know other name for these types) will stay 95% of their time in safe zones, and Pvp players will be in unreg or wherever you can shoot. might as well create 2 servers.. Other thing is. Safe zones attract people who like to trash talk other people. What I like about current Jumpgate is that there is no safe spot for jerks. You can always be killed. unless you stay on a station forever. if just selected faction can gate there.. then it is some kind of safe zone. |

heh, if someone was being a real prick we could even roleplay the complaints to the GM's. Perhaps have a formal complaint filed with that faction and request extradition. If granted the criminal find themselves logging in at GBS.
