As far as I know, the only MMO I've played that had single person instances was COH. SWG had the corvette missions, but you had to be either very lucky or an advanced player to solo them, and that's only because they were bugged. Like Istvan said, instances are a way to create less stress on the server. They're also used for when you get into situations that you couldn't possibly handle with outside interferrence. I know quite a few people are against the idea of instancing just for that reason alone, because it denies them of that exact opportunity to abuse somebody else when they least expect it or are most vulnerable.

@ELP: I'm sorry if my comment offends you. It wasn't directed towards you or anyone in particular. But like Scorch said, the concept of instanced battlegrounds are used for "Quake style combat", not real space PvP. We've been going around and around, all of us, about what's good and what's bad for Jumpgate Evolution since the announcement was made. So far, not a single idea that's been brought up has met with overwhelming approval. That's to be expected. But I can guarantee you this; none of us are going to do the game any good by standing firm and demanding that the game be exactly what we as individuals want it to be. You can either learn to roll with the punches, or be secure in the knowledge that you'll be disappointed in the end.

SWG= Star Wars Galaxys, a very buggy poorly implemented MMO but the space game was realy good.

The vettes wern't bugged. What happened is someone killed the vette but didn't kill the escorts. and the escorts would buzz around the exit point untill someone came allong and killed them. I do suppose that could be considered a bug. Just to brag a little, I did all 9 of the space tracks solo useing only advance basic ships, and never got killed even did the final corvette mish for each one with no fatality.

There is a type of instancing that does not involve the creation of a separate zone. In SWG there are 9 story tracks 3 for each faction Empire,rebel,neutral or rogue. Some of these missions will spawn an encounter when you reach a specified waypoint. An example would be, 3 gunboats would have to be destroyed before they can dock at the nearby station. These gunboats would be escorted by a contengent of fighters and shuttles. Even though this encounter was spawned in open public space, only the group members can attack the ships involved. Everyone else could only watch.

I'm pretty sure we will see this style of instancing in Jumpgate Evolution.

I was actually referring to the original corvette missions. The neutral destroy mission was the easiest. I had it down to a science and ran it at least once a day for AV-21 powerplants. With my Jedi I didn't need buffs. That was all back in the day before the CU killed the game, though.

Ahh, When got involved with Jump to Light Speed , The SWG space game, They had allready changed the vette missions and nerfed the component drops and drop rates. I finished my 9 track run just 3 days before the Combat Ungrade and my account expired. It was a fun run but dam it was easy. The only pats that were difficult was the 3 gunboat mish and the rebel vette in useing a basic advance headhunter. That was because the Tie Advanced fighters had rear fire turrets that actualy worked.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned a great use of instancing, exploration. This would probably a space equivalent of a randomised dungeon where there is some great reward but you would have to search for it but there would be some serious flux (or some other AI enemy) to impede your search. Naturally, you would be above to group (or wing) with other pilots to assist. This could easily be RPed as an unstable jumpgate which transports you to a random location in deep space.

This is, essentially, my issue with instancing. While I, admittedly, enjoy catching people off guard and forcing my RP onto them, I also enjoy the danger of that very thing happening to me.

In my opinion, instancing is nothing more than another safe zone concept; and, since I am an ardent non-consensual pvp proponent, I am inherently against the concept.

remember all those folks who were told to go play single-player games because they weren't in line what with the player base wanted? well now they can! Sweet! new market segment!

(serious note: I'm all for some instanced content. the more content, the better, in every area. bring it! wootage and stuff!)

Ok,, Scorch, mentioned the instanced content, to be pvp driven. But not to exclude open space pvp.

So ten buddies can do their thing, without interacting with the basic community.

It will allow newbies to get trained, without being trashed by the vets.

The ratio to peeps playing instanced content, and open space is not known.

But i dont think ill be playing instanced content.

I have a lot of reservations, about stats, lvls, cash, medels, that are aquired in instance content. But i dont worry about McP's cash, i dont guess ill worry about some peep that got his stats in instance content.

Our job is to get them out of instance content, and into open space, where the real fun will be. We need to make sure that its fun for them, and not just a launch and die.. scenario.

Well, what I understand so far after Istvan's explanation... instancing is out of your control. If ND does it... the server decides whether to instance your experience or not. I dont like it much, but if implemented, I have no control over it and none should the others. I just hope Im not instanced in a 1 on 1 with (insert preffered enemy here).

Excellent point Cpt. Blood! It would perfectly fit into the Exploration scenario. It's probably the only way "Exlporation" could be available for numerous players over time. Even at that, it would have to have some "randomizer" or else folks would just tell new players "how to explorer it", etc. Otherwise, you can only be "first" once or something like that...

Also the "super fluxing expedition" idea makes good sense. I mean hell, we've been fighting the flux now for what, six years? And we're no closer to exterminating those vermin than we were at the start. In fact, the flux are actually STRONGER and more numerous than theyh were six years ago. So having a "fluxing instance" wouldnt' harm the game at all.
