Integrated Voice Chat?

That popped into my head reading a few replies in the Hollywood Sound thread.

Counterstrike does it, EVE does it now (I think), and heck knows who else.

Personally, I'd hate to see it, so I was wondering whether it was/is considered in Jumpgate Evolution. I don't really want to be spoken to by a RL persona unless I choose to (for RP/immersion reasons), and besides, I'm sure that most people who do use voice chat would still use their own programs, like TS or Ventrillo.

Thoughts?

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

I'm completely against voice chat being provided in that manner. Its bad for business, ESRB ratings, and there is no real way to police it in a manner that will keep everyone happy.

The most I would want, and the best solution, is to integrate chat programs that are already available so that they can be controlled from within the game, without tabbing out or what ever. Basically I want the game to support my 3rd party software in a way that is convenient for me, my squad, and the occasionally person we would like to invite.

The problem with what I would like to have, is that the only program capable of support like this is TS2, and this could severly piss off alot of people because they insist on clinging to ventrillo.

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Clinging to Ventrillo? What about Roger Wilco users? haha

It would be nice to get 3rd party support, but I don't think it's that necessary for voice. Squads usually find a way to host their own TS or Vent servers, but it would be cool if ND had some we could use or something. I really don't see the need for an in-game voice interface since you usually log in while alt-tabbed, and once you get the settings right you don't mess with them anymore.

I'm torn. Vent works fine for me, so does TS. Why complicate Jumpgate Evolution with ingame voice support when most game's ingame voice is inferior to 3rd party solutions?

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Jumpgate is a game where in combat, you CANNOT type.

With that fact in mind, voice chat would definately be a good thing. Maybe limit it to wings or squads, and maybe being able to set a chat channel you make to voice as well so you can set up meetings and such.

Intergrated voice chat is fine if you do it right. Just make it so you it's only for Squads or "raid groups."

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

If its implemented, make sure we have the option to turn it off.

Me and fellas I play with will continue to use our own voice server.

Personally, I think its a waste of dev cycles since there are viable alternatives.

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Seems to me that there are other viable alternatives. Heck, we have a Team Speak server sitting mothballed here at Joystick Required that no one ever used.

I have never played a game that had it built in. Is the quality of sound as good as the alternatives? It used to annoy me when everyone would talk at once on TS.

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Aces High 2 does it and in a fantastic way.

There are two voice chats.

One is proximity based. Basicly your short range radio to communicate with allies in battle.

One is tuneable by the user. It can be tuned to any of the preset channels (nation, squad, ect) or to a user created chat (114, 210, 232, what ever).

This way you have your group on voice and your battle on voice.

Discipline is good so all "drunken chatter" is kept of the proximity chat and that is really just "heck your six, bank right, I need help, ect" type of talk.

You can mute any player just like you can ignore him on text chat.

Works great and this makes the game VERY accessible for lone rangers, solo players, noobs, ect that always other ways tend to be disoriented in battle.

This does even more to the battle coordination then going from text based to team speak.

Should definatly be a high prio feature.

If you doubt me DL AH2 and try it... its a 2 week free trial no cc needed....

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Planetside, Red Orchestra, Day of Defeat, Counter-strike all have internal voice comms and they all are worse quality than teamspeak.

AH2 has good sound quality, just as good as TS2.

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

Not really worth the effort guys. Vent and TS work fine (even roger wilco *GASP*), so why tax the dev team with something that's already provided?

Re: Integrated Voice Chat?

There is a feature that Ive always "dreamed" about which is a Jumpgate/EvE/Wing Commander cross over feature.

EvE has a great face modeler.

Wing Commander has a little window on the hud that displays the character you are talking with.

Give Jumpgate EvE´s face modeler, a voice chat, the hud window and a lip synch algoritm that synchs the lips of the face with the voice chat.

Imho this would be a super neat feature that would add huge ammount of immersion to the game play.
