The Jumpgate Evolution Shards Thread

Since it was mentioned by Hermann that Jumpgate Evolution will have shards if it becomes popular we obviously need a shard thread.

Should this happen, and I hope the game is that successful, then I would hope they would make the shards system spec dependent. Maybe when they hit the critical number of players they could launch a Shard for people with higher system specs and could have a DX10 version of the game, and later on a PhysX based version Shard. Yeah, it's more work but a guy can dream can't he. That way the game can evolve and still be playable to those with older systems. Just my silly idea.

What does everyone else think of the idea of shards? My guess is the first would be a US and EU split.

I asked this elsewhere but since this thread is dedicated to "shards" I'll ask it again. What is a "shard"? From the sound of it, I would guess a seperate server as in WOW and other games with a place for PvP and PvE, but no one said "server" so maybe a "shard" is something else I don't know. What is it?

yeah, I'm confused over the sharding thing. ATM we have 1 server, with sharding does this mean that there wont be a single wws anymore?

Ive read elswhere about ND looking for overseas partners, does this mean I look at the list of available Jumpgate Evolution servers, find one with the lowest ping for me and connect to there?

"Shards" is the term used for Duplicate Servers. The term was originally coined by Origin systems for a game called Ultima Online. Origina was bought by EA, and the UO is still alive today.

I don't think that maintaining multiple code bases to support different specs is something that Netdevil wants to do, but you never know. It's more likely they would be located in different parts of the world due to Pings.

They'll need to tread lightly though, as ( with a few exceptions, I'm sure) most of us will want to play on the same server. In the early going, I forsee a pretty big population imbalance resulting from that.

Well if they are thinking about shards, then we can assume that the game universe is not big enough to have same online numbers as Eve.

And I would probably agree to that, since Jumpgate would not fit for huge universe style of play..

But I would hate if Jumpgate becomes divided into PVE, PVP, RP, and so on servers.

it's a game.. one of thousands. There are already a ton of fake, silly little hills collectively referred to as "online games". So shards will make a few more.. groovy

(I like it because, here's my prediction.. like minded folks will eventually group themselves. quake-in-space in one shard, fluffy clouds in another, etc)

Can I just ask why? I think the community would be happier if split between PvE and PvP. I honestly don't think the two groups think alike at all, and trying to accommodate both groups has lead to some very awkward game mechanics - tags, etc.

Im with E55 splitting the servers would be a mess, keep it as one im nauseous
at the thought of a big happy holding hands carebear server, for one The community as we know it would be gone.

I don’t know any one who wants split servers for PVP or PVE im not sure what community Jonboy is in.

God ND don’t do it. Emm The buzz I had for Jumpgate Evolution has just taken a large dent.

Just cant get it out of my head, maybe a rant will help..

Im not a great fan of the WWS for a few reasons and long for the old EU for a lot of the same reasons, but now with all this talk about shards and having a server just for PVE or carebears holding hands and singing around the camp fire makes me want to puke.

Id much rather be on the same server as everyone else as moving servers would mean losing touch with a lot of people and I can see the game becoming sterile and well just damn boring, god think of chat full of happy go lucky people all singing hymns and being nice to one another URGGHUUHHHUH.

I can see why this might come to pass but surely It wont be from the release? Or are ND expecting that many people joining up to warrant the shard server set up ?( edit I see it might come to pass if...)

The one thing I like about Jumpagte is the big ole melting pot of people from all over the world, then add to that the mix of playing styles. = the spice of life. I couldn’t think of anything more boring than flying through space where everyone has the same agenda.

Great if you’re a PVP player Im sure but then how would the Econ manage its self, you would have to through the Haulers and Econ workers and miners into the same server, so what you’d have one server with Fluxer’s and die hard carebears off the *don’t touch me or ill run off crying to a GM ?*

I think you’d have the fluxer’s migrating to the PVP server pretty damn quick at least it would then fell like your involved in a dynamic living universe.

Would different shards have different rules? Different GM’s? Different FM’s ?
