I would suspect this would be difficult to use. For example, how would you know if the person just asked a question in corp chat was in corp chat, and what if at the same time as he asked his noob question your wingman was naming a target in wing chat?

I would think the channels would have priority settings, so if one comm is going off another won't. Also, I would think there would be some sort of on screen indicator (perhaps a colored speaker icon, one color per type of comm similar to chat) that lights up when incoming voice transmissions are going.

At least thats how I would set it up

That's exactly what I was thinking, a priority list or the name of the speaker appears somewhere on your screen color coded to the channel they're talking in.

And you could turn it off, of course!

voice chat makes everything so much better! that way when you jump in and theres on shady looking ship around u can hail, and if he goes heeeeeey, want some candy? you know to run away

really though, voice chat ingame I would love, make it so it can be disabled and maybe only have 3 channels open at once to save the servers. Ex) the local channel, your squad, and maybe some trading channel? THe on screen indicators for what channel its coming from I would be all for. I think tho that especially in populated areas you could run into the spam problem, intentional or just because its busy. The way around this I see is to have multiple channels per area. Examples a looking for group channel, and trading channel, and a chit chat channel, so while your trying to talk to someone u dont have to hear "SELLING DEATH LASER 596568AAADHH77 DOLLARS!" Also maybe a max on the amount of people actively talking in a channel, so when the game realizes 7 people are talking at once that it should start sending newcommers to "sector alpha(2)", possibly with the option for them to switch over into the main one should they choose. I think trading spam would be kept to a min. tho anyway because those people have it in their favour to type anyway. Private channels I wouldn't put those rules on.

The simple solution is to make Jumpgate Evolution Xfire capable... It comes complete with a very large playerbase and an integrated Voice Chat channel....

We used it for MxO extensively...

Just put an unobtrusive box that appears down in the corner that says [ person : channel ] whenever someone opens their yap. As soon as they stop talking, it goes away.

As for its ease of use.. how many times did someone hit the wrong F button for the message they were typing?
