Jumping

Back when I first started playing Jumpgate my pc wasn't the best and I had a 56k modem, so when I jumped into a new sector there was a black screen for a few seconds sometimes longer. Today its pretty much instant but I was thinking with the new graphics and AI ships to load up we will probably have a few seconds between sectors again. Rather than having a black or loading screen could we have some kind of animation, something along the lines of the Stargate wormhole or the Andromida slipstream sort of thing.

gets my vote

Also, can the jumping times be linked to capacitor to charge rates.

Ships with fast charge caps can jump Quicker than ships with slow charge caps. This means that jump frequencies become capacitor dependant and that adds variety to ships jumping in and out of sectors.

Re: Jumping

IIRC, you already get a few seconds of invulnerability when you jump into a sector. Having to balance the ships is hard enough as it is, without have to balance how fast a ship can jump from one sector to another.

Also, the worm hole effect sounds good at get go, but would get really old having to watch that clip everytime you jump in/out of a sector.

My vote is no.

Re: Jumping

one word SILENCE - the effect would be client side, so it wouldn't generated any kind of lag.

Anyway... I vote no. If they do it, it would have to bea a very quick effect, no more then 1 second long. Otherwise it would definately get annoying.

Re: Jumping

I see where you guys are coming from, but from the sounds of this idea, it would only play when you were jumping in to a sector and you'd have gate lag. Instead of being stuck on the pre-jump side, or at a black screen, a bink video could play...

Personally, I think it would be too taxing for our computers to have to switch between 3d and 2d modes during a jump for this to be a reality, plus my hard drive would have to load the movie into the ram, etc... there would not just be gate lag but computer lag as well.

So I vote no, but for different reasons than above. Maybe in a single-player game, or the sims, but not in Real Space.

I mean at the mo its bad enougth sitting in a gate for up to 3 min's somtimes, without adding anything that would add to that.

Re: Jumping

Really, after the first few times, how many didn't hit ESC after "J", in Privateer, instead of waiting for the "beam out" animation of making a jump between systems?

Not unless you can turn it off.

This idea was going to be implemented in a game I was working on with a few ppl. It does create a small balance issue however, what it also does as you correctly point out is variety.

The system devised elsewhere was based on charge rates and total capacity. For example, a ship with a very large cap could jump twice in a very short time before they needed to re-charge. Also a very small ship with a smaller fast charge cap, could jump twice almost as quickly because the recharge rate would fill the cap quickly enough. In Jumpgate i would suggest a minimum wait time however this would provide an issue to those ppl who simply keep jumping to avoid conflict.

With all of this the underlying thing was that caps were a very different prospect. Not like Jumpgate caps at all. But that takes us into weapons and thats a different thread.

However, some animation would be great - your ship could disintegrate and then reassemble its parts on the other side, matrix style (without the numbers please)

Re: Jumping

There is no sound in space so I vote that we turn off all sound effects except for in-cabin ones, like our character flipping the JPR switch, or my cabin vibrating from... my cannons. Yeah, my cannons.
