The Leveling treadmill
Surprised I haven't seen this mentioned before really (or if it has I apologise in advance).
Back in the day I remember a lot of complaints about the so called "leveling treadmill". I had to agree that it made no sense that I should have achieved opti when there was at least one major aspect of the game I had never done and a few more I had only done a little of. Surely this award should be given to players who have mastered every aspect to the game. Optimus kinda suggests that to me. Maybe have separate leveling for each profession, but these are averaged into a single level to give a fair idea of your progress. And make ships and equipment that are suited to a particular profession only available to people who have achieved a certain level in that profession. Why should a fluxer who's killed a load of flux but rarely mined get access to the top of the range mining equipment? OK, thats just my quick idea, I'm sure you people will find better ones, or maybe your all happy with the current leveling system? Smeg |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
level 26 wasn't that bad. Just a few days of really heavy fluxxing with a friend.
Level 49->50 was more hell than 0->26. And I kind of hope it stays, it shows who is more willing to work for the levels, and who just wanted to get high enough for a certain ship. |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
i'm just happy with the current leveling system. especially when it's based on twitch and the player's actual skills(don't confuse with skill points).
skilled players can get up to a descent level if you know how to handle certain types of high level conflux. unskilled players would take them weeks to get up something like that. theres no need to make it more complex. |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
I'd prefer it if there were no levels at all, and cash were the main determinate of whether or not you could fly whatever ship. The entire level system is rather artificial and more suited to Dungeons & Dragons type games. Of course, it's standard for MMOs and it's just a small hope I have that Netdevil will dare to be different/better.

Re: The Leveling treadmill
than this game would be much like a sandbox where if you created an account, got a few million handout by a squad, and were able to get a fighter, then nobody would be using the shuttles.
people actually need to earn something in the game instead of instantly getting the ships with big guns. |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
I agree with everything GrimGriz has said in this thread so far.
Shocking. =P I see no need for levels at all, and every ship should be useful. If that means less ships, then that's fine! I'd rather have less ships that are all useful, then tons of ships that are only used when you are low level and quickly outclassed. |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
I think we should have a certificate system similar to PlanetSide, where instead of experience points, we get certificate points that we can spend on stuff, such as a certification to purchase fighter ships, which gives us access to all fighters.
Bah, i'll make a new thread. |

Re: The Leveling treadmill
Some compromise would probably work well though. Shuttles, etc based on level/experience but once you get out and around on your own, what you work at, and are good at, should help you get better ships/equipment in that area. I'm with Smegit on this. If you want something, you should have to work for it, not just buy it with possibly 2nd account or borrowed/loaned money.
I'm no fan of the leveling treadmill, but I think what you do in the game should affect what you can do in the game. I made Opti in two years. I've now been one for what, four years? I have access to everything in game but I'm lousy in so many facets and areas. Have I "earned" the right to fly a Dragon? Probably not. Tug, maybe. HM certainly. Nix? Yeah, right. If I'm a good miner, I should have access to better mining tools, etc. If I'm a combat pilot, I should have access to better combat equipment. And so on. Not just standard experience for level or credits for purchase. Don't know if this is some WOW thing or guild or whatever, but it just makes sense to me. We'll see how ND handles it. |

I haven't heard anything about ships yet, but based on Lupin's review it looks like equipment will be level related. That should be very interesting when it comes to player versus player combat. |
