Mining Lasers in Jumpgate Evolution

In a post on the JOSSH forums, I made post about another space based MMO I have played. In it, every ship had mining lasers. It made it very easy to mine, since you could do it any time, any where, any ship. I am not looking to replace mining ships, since you would be able to add more lasers and hold more cargo than a Fighter or a Bomber. But if I was out in a ship, and felt like mining a few roids to make some quick cash with, this would make it possible. With all I hear about raw ore shortages, this may help increase stocks a little. Maybe something like a good size two or size three for your average Fighter or Transport ship.

Good idea, bad idea?

Win Button? ( this one is for Ambro )

Re: Mining Lasers

i think all ships having the equivalent of a Banker on their nose wouldn't be a bad idea. Just make it so that it triggers off of a different button than the trigger. Who could really complain about a slight boost to the mining speed of a mining vessel anyways?

Re: Mining Lasers

The way things work now, adding a mining laser would also add weight. I suspect many would not want to add weight to their fighters.

I don't think it's a winbutton, but my vote would be "no" because (as you know) I favor a situation where one is required to make a series of benefit/drawback decisions.

Re: Mining Lasers

Perhaps the ability to change weapons in space? Currently I can carry both ammo/lasers and mining lasers, or displacers/insights, then simply dock at a Public POS to change out if necessary. What if I could change out without having to dock? Perhaps have to come to zero v, or squat on a 'roid to do the change, so I couldn't just do it on the fly.

Then again, I'm not all that unhappy about the current way of doing things either in this regard.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

perhaps if the mining ships had a dedicated mining laser?and then just give them a couple size 2 or 3 regular guns so they could choose between boosting their mining ability or defense

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

Personally, I would rather see pilot owned mining drones. Leave your drones and pick them up later. If the pirates haven't taken them that is. This would make it much easier for someone to strategically locate a POS and create a mining business.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

Mining Drones would be an awesome add in. If you really wanted to make it even better, separate the miners so that you could balance # of miners with available cargo space. Smaller miners go slower, but don't take up much space, but faster ones take up more space. But then that would also require that space interacts with your cargo ship in-game. That would be kind of complicated.

I guess if you wanted to try to impliment it without having to re-think too many things... miners could take up space in your cargo bay and that would be a static amount. Cargo would then fill up from then on.

Would you want to make these drones naturally decay or need to be replaced?

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

I was thinking more on the lines of bigger ships can pick up and place multiple drones. They would also have more guns to use when they dye trying to defend them.

I'm hoping they will implement some of the technology from Auto Assault for environment destruction and such.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

All these other ideas may be ok for miners, but my suggestion was more for those that don't like to mine. Like me.

Lasers have weight, ok, but why not design one from scratch that can't be bought? It is only equiped on ships as the base laser, and has a very small amount of mass. That would solve that problem.

Drones are good for miners, again, I'm not a miner. I am looking for something that would allow me to just do a quick bit while flying around in another ship. Say I'm in my bomber, I could just grab 36 units real quick and sell them. It may not be much, but if anyone could do it whenever they felt like it, it would add up.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

Forget the way mining has been done in the past. I played a game awhile back(i don't remember what it was called) where the mining was done on the planet. It was sort of like renting time on a mining terminal. You started the process, then it would run on its own while you left to do other stuff. When it was done, you came back to retrieve the ore. Takes the tedium out of mining, which imo pretty much stank in the way the original Jumpgate handles it. More peeps would be willing to mine ore, providing commodites to the economy.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

How about this: mining lasers - fast, mining station or droids - slow.

A trade-off. If you want it fast, you have to do it yourself. If you do not like the amount of time it is going to take, you have to wait for it.

Re: Mining Lasers in Jumpgate

I would be quite disappointed if the 'original' way you mined in Jumpgate was no longer possible. The wonderful thing I loved about the game (as a devoted Quantar) was that nearly everything you did required skill, including mining, and was thus very exciting and interesting. Anyone who ever mined in EVE Online should know exactly what I'm talking about. Speed mining was an aquired skill.

As to the original suggestion, I wouldn't mind seeing something like that on Quantar ships, since that would fit the RP wonderfully. I'm sure that every self-respecting pilot from Octavius would rather saw off the 'offending' part of the ship before taking off and being seen with a mining laser equipped.

That sounds pretty good, and it could be cool to see people attempting to steal the ore from mining droids and stuff as well.
