Unless your pulling our legs, and thats just mean
A little of both. Remember, the JOSSH forums describe me as a "mean old man". In all seriousness, it appears we are revising the entire structure of afterburner/flashfire code. It's hard to say for sure right now how different things will be. We're trying to balance demand for a faster travel process against the obvious problems that result from having access to high speeds in combat. Some form of expendable "combat boost" MODx might still make it into the game, but my guess based on the way the wind is blowing is that the "combat boost" concept will be wholly changed.

Re: my humble suggestion

I wonder how well ammo vs lasers will work without FF. Doubt it would work at all as it is now..

Istvan, you may think your a mean ol man, but in my book, your a freaking god. Your listening to us, and taking your great amount of experience from both inside Jumpgate Classic/Jumpgate Evolution, and behind the scenes and applying everything we are suggesting towards making Jumpgate Evolution the best it possibly can. For that, we thank you.

Also, the fact you just said that you are tying to make faster travel possible just makes me jump for joy!

Re: my humble suggestion

Seriously...I always marveled how players would have huge whine fests about speed balancing between ships when in combat it really only mattered who had the most Flash Fires. If you guys are redoing that, that would be a huge boost in advancing the game.

Re: my humble suggestion

Karash, while I agree, the amount of FF a ship could carry was a big part in its ability to engage and disengage for the short term, overall the faster your ship, the better off you are once those FF are used up.

Take the phoon for example, it was always able to run down a tense that had run out of FF, however the nix could not.

Re: my humble suggestion

Not having a 1-use per flight style of temporarily increasing speed would mean some pretty big changes.

Not necessarily bad changes, but there were a few things FFs did that were at least in some ways handy.

Like stopping a very very heavy tow? Like to the point you have to use two of them...

Re: my humble suggestion

If they go, I'll certainly miss them. Judicious or unjudicious use of flashfires was always an interesting thing in my book. Is that guy limping away worth a flashfire? If I burn one can I get that nix off Zico's six in time? How many FFs is pilot 'X' running? How many did he burn already?

Re: my humble suggestion

i dont know how i feel about removing FF's. They were obviously overpowered, and should of been standardized as far as all fighters should get the same amount.

Maybe a good change would be making afterburners much more powerful, but take more fuel (that might even recharge a small amount over time, kinda like in Freespace)

That way, the engine efficiency stat on your engines could be a lot more meaningful.

I know how you feel, the FF has been the cornerstone of Jumpgate, both in and out of PvP.

But I really like your idea of afterburners being more than what they are now, and even more than that I love the recharge ability. Perhaps the ships need to have a ram scoop modx or something (this is another idea stolen from Escape Velocity), but the ability to at least be able to build up enough fuel to use your brakes again is a welcome addition in my mind.
