Playable Hyperions?
Some have suggested on another thread about Playable Hyperions. So, here is a thread for that suggestion. It is only a matter of time before the Hyperion government gets fed up with being 'Left behind' in the Reconstruction Initiative, especially when Solrain, Octavius, and Quantar expand their territory, number of colonies/stations, and military strength.
Hyperion pilots will fall into two primary classifications. They will either be neutral pilots who want nothing to do with the fighting between the 'Big Three', or they will be pirates. Both 'classifications' will have pilots that either wish to return Hyperial to it's former glory, or just want to make personal fame and fortune. Hyperions may have their own ship designs, but they may use ships/designs purchased/aquired from TRI. Any other thoughts here? |

Re: Playable Hyperions?
Good idea starting thread on this subject.
I would see hyperion as the Wing Commander Free Republic of the Landreich... a nation consisting of loosely banded pirates, smugglers, refuges and other shady people... the Landreich fly old terran ships with pimped out engines and weapons. Landreich does have a space force so millitary missions would be available for Hyperion but they would be mostly defensive as they dont have the manpower nore organization to push any big attacks. The ships would be for example (Im talking concept and not ballance): Hype Fighter is basicly a Solrain MF with bigger engines, less armour, fewer but bigger guns. Hype MF is basicly a Oct LF with bigger engines, less armour, bigger but fewer guns. Hype LF is a quant LF with bigger engine, smaller shield, less armour, bigger gun. Pilots cant start as Hyperial but they can join hyperial at level XX and above Tex |

Re: Playable Hyperions?
Hyperial should have some of their own ships, at the very least, as well as homegrown shields, radars, powerplants, as well as smaller/lower end Engines and Capacitors.

A two-sided (Pirate and Neutral) Hyperial is better than two Stereotyped factions, in my opinion. PS: Did anyone ever notice that Hyperial has military service ribbons? |

Re: Playable Hyperions?
They're not really service ribbons for Hyperial. Much of Jumpgate Classic's artwork were pallete shifted to the standard colors of all factions involved in the game (green, blue, red, pink, grey, orange, purple).
I would be happy if the Hyperion's let me fly "stolen" fighters from the other factions after earning the right to do so somehow... of course, this would bring up factional loyalty questions in addition to making the initial race-decision moot. So I'm torn between yes and no. |

Re: Playable Hyperions?
Well, Hyperial does produce the Dream and Rush engines so you could expect great engines. They do the Screwdriver and Morning Star Missiles, so there's some good tech there as well. Insight and Burglar are also Hype exclusives.
I like TexMurphy's concept of being able to switch allegiences once a certain level or other marker is achieved. That would eliminate having to re-set just to do something different. It SHOULD be difficult and have some penalty or price to avoid it being like the old HG tags that could be changed like clothes. On the other hand, I think it's pretty clear from the story board etc on JOSSH that Hyperians are a seperate race or at least faction. Weren't they kind of Quantars at one point? Or was the GVB war more territoral than schismatic? Now a Pirate faction loosely allied to Hyperial is something I could buy into (re: the insights and burglars). It would make even more sense to be able to switch allegiences to pirate. That's sort of what we have now, but without the advantages a "faction" provides. I digress... Hyperians should become a playable faction from the get-go with their own ships, etc but as mentioned on JOSSH, they did LOSE the GVB and have a lower status in the game. Seems unlikely they would have a powerful military machine, but look at Germany in the '30s if you want a basis to build on. |

Re: Playable Hyperions?
Do you guys really think we will have all the same equipment and ships like we had in Jumpgate? It seems a lot of the discussion and debate centers around the belief there will actually be "Dreams" and "Rushes"...I guess I inferred something wrong when Jump stated they were renaming the Solrain rookie ship (in his contest thread).

They have a lot of high tech expertise in Capacitor, Missile, Gun, and Engine technology, but absolutely zero experiance with Shields and Powerplants. Hyperial could be, on average, slightly more 'advanced' than the three major factions, but is consistantly suffering from a material shortage, in addition to having to build their entire ship production from nothing. Even if Hyperial is finally starting to pull themselves out of an economic depression, it will still put a strain on their limited resources and economy. Quote:
Jumpgate(TM) - Database:Medals Amananth lacks a Military service ribbon as well. |

However, Jumpgate: Evolution ended up cutting that plan out. Or at least, the plan to make Hyperial playable in Jumpgate Classic. |
