I think the only way true factionalism would be achieved is if people couldn't kill members of their own faction. I know that sounds carebear, but if that's not implemented, there will always be people who exploit their own. Now that sounds more realistic, but c'mon, this is a game. If you want to fly XXX faction's ships, but want to be a rogue element not aligned with that faction's government, let them be neutral somehow, like the pirate tags tried to become. Neutral stations could provide safe harbors for these individuals or squads.
You can still have civil war/dissent, but you'll have to break away from your government to do so. Hmm... forced RP... |

I'm all for removing tags. But there is one detail that really prevents it.
Griefing. There would be nothing to discourage all out ripping of people that cannot defend themselves. And in Jumpgate that was very simple to do. Create new account, level up, rip when there is an opportunity, log out or sit in station when there is gank fleet waiting for you. |

I dislike the current tag/military system. IMO it somewhat forces factionalism. There is no easy way to have a multi-factional squad anymore (which used to be very popular) since you can no longer dock at each others stations and such (I know, POSes but bleh...) it is very difficult also to have squads like ISU with the current system (not that ISU exists atm, but the idea of being able to do it would be nice, Jumpgate is advertised as being able to do whatever you want after all).
That being said, I don't really know what the best solution would be. |
