Radar Improvements for Jumpgate Evolution?

I was just thinking about the radar a bit while reading another thread...

I always thought the Jumpgate Classic radar was a little lacking. A lot of time I was using line of sight (hat switch) and targeting to "figure out" where people were.

I know I had already mentioned Make Targets flagable this improvement, but I wanted to make an entire thread about just the radar, and ways it could be improved.

Another option I want is something from "Escape Velocity" (single player space game). There was the option to buy radar upgrades so instead of a single white dot, you could have 1) colored dots depending on if someone was hostile towards you (or targeting you in Jumpgate Evolution maybe), and 2) different size dots depending on how big the ships bouncing the radar signal back.

This would help to know how many hostiles, and how big they are at first glance instead of having to cycle all the targets.

I'm not sure if those upgrades should be stock, ship specific, or something you have to mount as a type of modx (or some other modx like slots)

Ideas? Criticism?

Re: Radar Improvements?

Hmmm... a radar that color coded by ship type? Not just faction but type. That could be handy for everyone.

A list you could make up of "always hostile" or "always friend" or even "squadmate" that would flag that pilot or pilots or squads any time they showed up on your radar would be handy. Trying to apply tags in the middle of an engagement would be a death sentence for me, but I'll willing grant there are plenty of better pilots out there that might be able to do it.

Alternately, if your nominated commander of the engagement could do this for members of the expedition that would be handy. Sort of a combination of CnC with AWACS. ( I would love a feature that allowed you to "wing" with more than one pilot. Think how useful it would be for mixed squad war parties!)

The ability to know you'd been targeted (or pinged?) could be useful as well. You do mean like when someone launches a missile on you, right? I automatically scan every pilot that shows up on my screen, it could be confusing as well. Just because you "target" someone, doesn't mean you're going to attack them. Good idea though.

IF these features were made as a purchaseable upgrade, rather than a modex, I think it would work well. I can't imagine many combat pilots would waste a FF slot for extra radar targeting capability but what do I know about combat? So either a seperate radar with limited availability to the general public or a upgrade that worked like an arty (gone when you take a pod ride) could be an interesting feature to have.

Thats what I was thinking, it just helps add to the amount of information given to you by the radar, which I always felt was lacking.

that was the general feeling in the other thread if I got it right. I really liked Karash's idea of allowing a battle commander to make the target list and give target information.

How about non-hostile is green, someone who has targeted you is yellow, and anyone who has you targeted and has fired a weapon is orange, and anyone who has shot you is red?

There could be more to it than that, but just a outline. Maybe have flux pink, and NPCs outlines, or a different color.

To answer this... Modx slots rethought...

DON'T Grief The Grey Dots!

I think with the Flash interface they are implementing there is just so much more they can do in Jumpgate Evolution than was possible in Jumpgate.

Re: Radar Improvements?

I agree the radar needs work, I think it could be so much more useful than it is right now.

Love it. You make me uber happy by responding positively to this thread, while also make me uber-curious for no opinion on the idea(s).
