Ship Collisions

I'm surprised this discussion hasn't come up yet.

It honestly felt comical to me that pilots could literally fly right through each other like some kind of etheral ghosts rather than solid metal objects flying at high velocity.

Thoughts?

What was the original reason it was taken out?

Re: Ship Collisions

I like the idea of collisions.. but don't want the game to be turned into a ramming one... like ramming flux...

But, i would have no issue with shields simply bouncing off each other.. or sliding/redirecting movement while not taking dmg. While not totally realistic.. should stop the suiciders from becoming too annoying.

Re: Ship Collisions

In an MMO where all traffic is directed along narrow spacelanes towards one point, I think it's a really bad idea. Bumping is annoying enough. Collisions would be vicious.

Yikes!

I was thinking about it from a PvP standpoint as being pretty cool.
But when you put it that way.

That would suck bawlz to have some poor n00b in his premia splatter all over the windshield of a loaded tow.

Even the shield ricochet would be nasty.
Poor little shuttles getting scattered like bowling pins.
Trucking companies would be considered griefers.

Those were the days.

I pretty much assumed it couldn't work before I posted it because of Jumpgate's flight engine. Although, if they changed the way jumpgates work so that, when you jumped into a new sector, you didn't materialize in the middle of the gate, but instead were randomly placed near the gate at a set distance (say 1k away from it)... Actually, that would drastically change the gate camping aspect of PvP too, hmm...

Re: Ship Collisions

I think collisions should be turned on, with the exception of docking rings..

..are we virtual pilots or are we mice???

Re: Ship Collisions

If flux can spatter why not ships? Limiting it to shield bounce is okay in my book as well. I have never understood how a small ship, at low speed could knock my loaded tug or tow off line. Do ocean liners get knocked off line when hitting a row boat? For that matter, while mining and being harassed by C1-C3, I have never understood how the little buggers were able to push my loaded HM around at ALL much less to the degree observed.

Re: Ship Collisions

I was under the impression that they were going to make the game more noob friendly.
I shudder to think the reprecussions collision damage could have in this respect.
There was a reason many moons ago why we didn't have this, I just can't seem to remember why. Any old boys about that can enlighten my fading memory?

Regards
Al

Re: Ship Collisions

Yes, the same that Liet specified. It sounds like a good idea but does not work in practise. Especially for haulers or miners with full cargo.

And in PvP probly half of deaths would be due to ship collisions.

It works in practice and for real in other games.
