At the risk of grossing more sensitive folks out, the suggestion reminds me of hunting hogs or wild cattle with trained dogs. Once the quarry was located the dogs would harass the prey by biting the heels, or trying to grab the nose or ears to hold the animal in place or at bay until the hunters could get there. Same thing by attacking a larger ship with a scout, light fighter or medium fighter, just slowing them down with their extra mass or drag until the fighters/heavy fighters can catch up and deal with it.
