Voice Communications

If this idea has already been posted, my apologies!

I’d really like to see some built-in voice communication for Jumpgate Evolution. A few fun features come to mind. One in particular would be the ability to broadcast voice messages to everyone in your sector (like an audio F3), or to specific pilots in a sector (targeted pilot). A squad channel would also be fun.

This could add the new element of trying to intercept or even JAM someone’s voice communications, to disrupt their activities. Perhaps a modX that would allow you to monitor one pilots transmissions for a short time. Or even break into someone’s squad channel for a bit, just long enough to shout "YAR!!!". Ha ha ha!

Just batting around a few ideas. Later!

Re: Voice Communications

Not to mention the huge impact that would have on the games ESRB rating. Yeah, I know, "content may vary during online play" and all, but there is no way to moderate voice comms.

Re: Voice Communications

Voice chat should be integrated in game but it needs to be restricted to groups. AD&D online is done this way and it works great and makes coordinating stratagies fast and easy. If someone gets obnoxious they will most likely get booted from the group or muted by the other players. I think Gamespy is the one suplying and hosting the chat system for AD&D.

Open air chatting would get stupid and confusing quickly.

Re: Voice Communications

I like the idea of group voice chat and I would add ship to ship, where the receiving party would have to accept voice comms. I would also limit voice comms to same sector only.

I also agree just allowing open air broadcasting would be a mistake, but allowing a short prerecorded hail would be cool.

Yes, a short hail would be fun!

I see what you mean about completely open voice chat getting chaotic. Think "Ventrilo Harassment" X 10.

Aces High has a good voice system with channels. In essence, you get 2. There is the "Radio range" with which you can talk with everyone on your side within x-distance. Then there is chan# radio where you can set it to squad, or some random channel number. Something similar would be very nice.

That's a very cool alternative to the Jumpgate chat box. So "radio range" is like F3 (perhaps with a 2 or 3 sector range) and the other channels are like faction, fluxing, merchant, and private channels.

Is this part of the sub or is there an additional charge in AH?

Re: Voice Communications

The voice comm as well as chatboxes are all built into the game. With "radio range" and "channel" voice, you can see exactly who can hear you in a radio box when you bring up the chat. In a way (and I need to doublecheck) you could configure 4 or 5 "F5" channels, with one of them being "voice".

It is rather nice to be able to customize the channels you use. For example, in Jumpgate-classic, if I am not in a squad, F2 is useless. It would've been nice to change from squad to "F5: help" or something along those lines.

Back on topic of voice: Voice functionality, if built in, needs to be limited. Squad voice, Faction/All in sector voice. While disrupting voice comm in game would be cool, it probably won't happen since people would just move to Team Speak.

Re: Voice Communications

Amen to that. My friends all just use a TS server. I imagine that anyone that wants to use something of that sort would have it set up already wouldnt they?

Re: Voice Communications

Best thing with built in voice chat is that it brings noobs and unsquaded pilots onto the same chat server.

Today in all games that dont have built in voice chat the squads sit on their pressious TS2 servers and dont even chat ingame. This is horrible for RvR team work.

With the ranged channel you know everyone can always hear you if you call for help (unless you have been muted ofcourse).
